Yes, recovery agents can come to your home or office, but only within limits set by the Reserve Bank of India. The visit must fall between 8 am and 7 pm, the agent must identify themselves, and they must not shame or threaten you. This guide is for borrowers who want to know where and when a visit is lawful, including at work and on Sundays, and how to redirect it to a place you choose.
Can recovery agents come to your home?
Yes. A lender may send an agent to your home when an account is overdue. A visit alone is not harassment. It becomes a problem when the agent comes outside the allowed hours, refuses to identify themselves, threatens you, or tries to embarrass you in front of family or neighbours.
They may not enter without your permission. You can speak at the door, or ask them to come back at a time and place you choose.
Can recovery agents come to your office?
They can, but with limits. RBI's Directions of 6 August 2026, which take effect on 1 January 2027, spell out the order. An agent should ordinarily contact you at the place you choose. Only if you have named no place, or do not turn up at that place on two or more successive occasions, may they contact you at your home or your place of work.
Those Directions also say loan matters are to be discussed only with the borrower or guarantor, and treat humiliating you publicly or harassing co-workers as a banned harsh practice. So an agent may ask for you at reception. Telling your manager or colleagues about your debt is a different matter, and worth a complaint.
How to move the visit away from your workplace
Email the lender's grievance redressal officer and name a place and time for contact. Sample line: "Please contact me only at [address] between [time] and [time]. Do not visit or call my workplace at [name]." Keep a copy, because it shows you named a place if the agent later turns up at work.
Rules for recovery agent visits at a glance
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What hours? | 8 am to 7 pm, unless you expressly asked for another time |
| Which place? | The place you choose; otherwise your home or place of work |
| Sundays and holidays? | Not specifically barred, but the hours and conduct rules still apply |
| During a death, illness or wedding? | Agents should avoid such occasions |
| Must the agent identify themselves? | Yes, with an ID card, and should carry the lender's authorisation |
| Can they gather a crowd or shout? | No. They must keep decency and decorum |
Can recovery agents come on a Sunday or holiday?
RBI's rules fix hours of contact and do not name days of the week. A Sunday visit within the hours is therefore not illegal on that ground alone. You can still ask the lender in writing to avoid a particular time. The 2026 Directions say such a request should be honoured in normal circumstances.
What changes for home visits from 1 January 2027
- Lenders must tell you the recovery agency's details at least one day before the first visit.
- The agent must carry an authorisation letter and a copy of that notice, showing the agency's and the grievance officer's phone numbers.
- Lenders must publish a list of their recovery agencies on their website.
- Agents must promptly give an acknowledgement or receipt for any money collected.
- Lenders must have a policy on compensating you for loss caused by recovery actions that break the rules.
How to respond to a visit that breaks the rules
- 1Note the date, time, place, names and what was said.
- 2Photograph the ID, or record that it was refused.
- 3Ask anyone who saw the visit, such as a colleague or neighbour, to write down what they saw.
- 4Complain in writing to the lender's grievance redressal officer.
- 5If the complaint is not resolved in 30 days, file with the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
- 6For threats, force or trespass, file a police complaint.

Frequently asked questions
Can recovery agents come to my home?
Yes, between 8 am and 7 pm. They must identify themselves and behave civilly. They cannot enter without your permission, use force or try to embarrass you before family or neighbours.
Can recovery agents come to my office?
They should ordinarily contact you at the place you choose. If you name no place, they may contact you at home or at work, but they must not discuss your loan with colleagues or humiliate you there.
Can recovery agents come on Sunday?
RBI's rules fix hours rather than days, so Sundays are not automatically barred. The 8 am to 7 pm limit and the conduct rules still apply. You can ask the lender in writing to avoid certain times.
Can I refuse to meet a recovery agent?
You can decline to discuss the loan at that moment and ask for contact in writing or at a place you choose. Do not ignore genuine notices from the lender or a court.
Does a home visit mean a case has been filed?
No. A visit is a recovery step, not a court action. A real case comes with papers from a court or tribunal, which you can verify separately.
