The service

Credit card loan settlement in India: how it works

In short: Credit card settlement is an agreement in which your card issuer accepts a one-time payment lower than your total outstanding to close the card account. It usually applies once a card has been overdue for several months, and the account is then reported to credit bureaus as 'settled'.

Credit card debt behaves differently from a loan account. Interest is charged monthly on the revolving balance, late payment fees stack on top, and the minimum-due trap means a balance can keep growing even while you pay something every month. Card issuers also outsource collection earlier than most lenders do.

Legal Savvy reviews your statements to separate principal from accumulated interest and charges, then negotiates a settlement figure with the issuer. We ask for the settlement terms and the closure position in writing before you transfer anything, and if the issuer will not engage reasonably, the matter can be escalated to the Banking Ombudsman under the RBI grievance framework.

What we do for you

  • Statement review separating principal from accumulated interest, late fees, and charges
  • Negotiation conducted directly with the card issuer rather than through a collection agent
  • Written settlement letter obtained before any payment is transferred
  • Guidance where dues are spread across more than one card or issuer
  • Escalation to the Banking Ombudsman if the issuer does not engage through its grievance process
  • Written confirmation that the card account is closed and dues cleared after payment
