Can you settle a loan with HDFC Bank?
Yes. HDFC Bank can accept a reduced, one-time payment to close an overdue loan or credit card under its board-approved settlement policy. This is called a One-Time Settlement (OTS). The offer must be in writing on HDFC Bank's letterhead, you pay HDFC Bank directly, and the account is closed with a No-Dues Certificate.
HDFC Bank loan settlement is usually considered for personal loans, credit cards and business loans that have been overdue for several months, where full repayment is no longer realistic. Private banks usually move long-overdue personal loans and credit cards to a collections team before a settlement is discussed.
What HDFC Bank accepts depends on how long the account has been overdue, your income and genuine hardship, whether the loan is secured, and its own settlement policy. No one can promise a fixed percentage in advance; anyone who does is guessing.
About HDFC Bank and settling with it
HDFC Bank is India's largest private sector bank, and since its 2023 merger with HDFC Ltd it also holds one of the country's biggest home loan books. Most HDFC Bank settlement cases we see involve credit cards, personal loans or business loans.
HDFC Bank credit cards carry high interest on revolving balances plus late payment charges and GST, so long-overdue card dues can grow well above what was spent. Settlement here usually starts with separating principal from these charges.
What borrowers usually owe HDFC Bank
- Credit cards
- Personal loans
- Business loans
- Home loans (including former HDFC Ltd loans)
Worth knowing · head office Mumbai
- Collect your last six HDFC Bank card statements before any negotiation.
- Former HDFC Ltd home loans are now HDFC Bank loans; settle with HDFC Bank.
- Pay only against a letter on HDFC Bank letterhead, into an official HDFC Bank account.
HDFC credit card loan settlement
HDFC Bank credit card dues are handled by the bank's card collections team, separately from any loan you hold with HDFC Bank. Once a card account has been overdue for several months, the outstanding usually includes interest on the revolving balance, late payment charges and GST on those charges, so the total can be well above what you actually spent.
A credit card settlement with HDFC Bank starts with your recent statements: separating the principal from interest and charges, then a written hardship proposal. Pay only after HDFC Bank issues a settlement letter on its letterhead naming your card account, and keep the closure letter once the agreed amount is paid. The card is closed after settlement.
HDFC personal loan settlement process
For an HDFC Bank personal loan, the process usually runs in this order: the account falls overdue and moves to the collections team; you (or our legal experts on your behalf) send a written settlement request with proof of hardship; HDFC Bank reviews it under its own settlement policy; and, if it agrees, it issues a settlement letter with the amount and payment dates.
You then pay into HDFC Bank's official account by the dates in the letter, and ask for a No Dues Certificate after the last payment. Former HDFC Ltd loans follow the same process with HDFC Bank, since the 2023 merger.
When does HDFC Bank consider a settlement?
Lenders rarely settle an account that is being paid on time. Settlement usually comes up as an account moves through these stages:
- Stage 1
1–30 days
Reminder calls and late fees
- Stage 2
31–90 days
Collections team, penal charges
- Stage 3
90+ days
Account classified NPA
- Stage 4
Written off

A written-off account still legally exists: HDFC Bank can keep recovering it. Settling closes it for good.
HDFC Bank settlement vs restructuring vs full closure
| Settlement (OTS) | Restructuring | Full closure | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You pay | A reduced one-time amount | Full amount, new EMIs | Full outstanding |
| Best when | You can't repay in full | Income dip is temporary | You can afford it |
| Time to close | Weeks to a few months | Years of EMIs | Right away, if affordable |
| Recovery calls | Stop after payment | Stop if EMIs are paid | Stop after payment |

How to check your HDFC Bank settlement letter
A genuine settlement letter from HDFC Bank should show all of these. If one is missing, ask for a corrected letter before paying.
- HDFC Bank letterhead with an authorised signature
- Your name and loan or card account number
- The exact settlement amount and payment deadline
- Payment details of HDFC Bank's official account
- That the amount is in full and final settlement
- A promise to close the account and issue a No-Dues Certificate
HDFC Bank credit card settlement
Credit card dues grow faster than any other borrowing: interest runs on the whole unpaid balance, often above 3% a month, and late payment charges and GST are added every cycle. Paying only the minimum due keeps the account current but barely touches the balance.
In a HDFC Bank credit card settlement, the late payment charges, penal interest and the GST on them are usually the first to be reduced; the principal you actually spent is the hardest part to negotiate. Stop using the card, keep your last six statements, and pay only against a written settlement letter. Make sure the card account is closed afterwards.
HDFC Bank recovery agents: what RBI rules allow
Agents can
- Call between 8 am and 7 pm
- Visit with an ID and authorisation letter
- Remind you of dues politely
Agents cannot
- Threaten, abuse or shame you
- Call your family, friends or employer
- Call before 8 am or after 7 pm
If an agent crosses the line, complain in writing to HDFC Bank's grievance redressal officer. If there's no reply within 30 days, go to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in. See how our recovery harassment service handles this.
After you settle: your fresh start
Once you pay, HDFC Bank issues a No-Dues Certificate and closes the account. The recovery calls stop, the notices stop, and the debt is behind you. Keep the settlement letter, payment receipt and NOC safely.
From here, rebuilding is in your hands. Check your CIBIL report 30 to 45 days later to confirm the account shows as settled, and raise a dispute with the bureau if it doesn't. Pay any other credit on time, and your score improves steadily; you can also later pay the waived amount to have the account marked "closed". Our legal experts guide you through this after settlement too.
Mistakes to avoid with a HDFC Bank settlement
- Paying an agent in cash or to a personal UPI ID
- Accepting a verbal or WhatsApp offer
- Not collecting the No-Dues Certificate
- Ignoring legal notices and their deadlines
- Taking a new loan to pay the settlement amount
HDFC Bank loan settlement FAQs
Does HDFC Bank accept loan settlement?
Yes. HDFC Bank settles overdue loans case by case under its board-approved policy, in line with RBI's 2023 framework for compromise settlements. It usually considers settlement once an account is several months overdue and the borrower shows genuine hardship. Every offer should come on HDFC Bank's letterhead.
Can I settle my HDFC Bank credit card dues?
Yes. HDFC Bank can agree to settle long-overdue credit card dues for a one-time amount, usually after reducing late payment charges, penal interest and the GST on them. Collect your last six statements first, and make sure the card account is closed and a No-Dues Certificate issued after payment.
How do I get a settlement letter from HDFC Bank?
Once the lender approves a One-Time Settlement, it issues a settlement letter on its letterhead with your account number, the settlement amount and the payment deadline. Don't pay against a verbal promise or a WhatsApp message. Pay only after the letter arrives, and only into the lender's official account.
What is the HDFC Bank loan settlement contact number?
Use only the customer care number or email printed on your HDFC Bank statement or on HDFC Bank's official website, or visit a branch. Numbers shared on social media or by agents can be fake. Legal Savvy is independent of HDFC Bank; our legal experts negotiate with the lender on your behalf.
Can HDFC Bank recovery agents call my family or visit my home?
Agents working for HDFC Bank must follow RBI rules: contact only between 8 am and 7 pm, carry an ID and authorisation letter, and never threaten you or contact your family, friends or employer to shame you. Log every breach; it can be taken to the lender and the RBI Ombudsman.
Can I get a loan again after settling with HDFC Bank?
Yes. Settling closes the debt, stops recovery calls and gives you a clean starting point. Your CIBIL score improves steadily as you pay any other credit on time, and you can later pay the waived amount to have the account marked "closed". Our legal experts guide you on rebuilding your credit after settlement.
How long does HDFC Bank loan settlement take?
Usually a few weeks to a few months after a complete proposal reaches HDFC Bank. It depends on the lender's approval levels, how long the account has been overdue and whether it is already with a collections agency, a court or a Debt Recovery Tribunal.
Is it better to settle or restructure my HDFC Bank loan?
If your income has dropped only for a while, ask HDFC Bank about restructuring or a revised EMI first: it protects your credit record. Settlement suits borrowers who cannot realistically repay the full amount, because it closes the account at a reduced figure but leaves a 'settled' status.
