Can you settle a HDFC credit card?

Yes. HDFC Bank can accept a reduced, one-time payment to close an overdue credit card under its board-approved settlement policy, usually after the card has been unpaid for several months. The offer must be in writing from HDFC Bank, you pay HDFC Bank directly, and the card account is closed with a No Dues Certificate.

This guide is for HDFC Bank cardholders who have missed payments, are getting collection calls, or have already received a settlement offer, and want to close the card safely. What HDFC Bank accepts depends on how long the card has been overdue, how much of the balance is interest, late fees and GST rather than spending, your income and hardship, and its own settlement policy.

About HDFC Bank credit cards and settlement

HDFC Bank is India's largest private sector bank and one of the country's biggest credit card issuers, so HDFC cards are the most common card account in the settlement cases we see. Many borrowers hold an HDFC card alongside an HDFC personal loan; each is a separate account with its own outstanding and its own settlement.

HDFC Bank card dues are handled by the bank's card collections team, not your home branch. Before a card account turns overdue, HDFC usually offers to convert the outstanding into EMIs; once it has been unpaid for several months, the account moves to collections and a One-Time Settlement becomes the realistic route.

HDFC Bank cards we often see

  • Millennia
  • Regalia
  • MoneyBack+
  • Diners Club
  • Tata Neu and Swiggy co-branded cards

Worth knowing · head office Mumbai

  • Download your last six HDFC card statements from NetBanking before any negotiation.
  • If you also have an HDFC personal loan, settle each account separately and get a letter for each.
  • Pay only against a settlement letter on HDFC Bank letterhead quoting your card number's last four digits.

What happens when a HDFC credit card bill is not paid

Every card issuer in India follows RBI's credit card directions, so an unpaid HDFC Bank card moves through the same stages:

  1. Stage 1

    Due date missed

Late fee, interest on the full balance, 18% GST on charges

  2. Stage 2

    3+ days late

Reported to credit bureaus as past due

  3. Stage 3

    30–90 days

Card blocked, collection calls, 7-day notice before default reporting

  4. Stage 4

    90+ days

Account is an NPA; full balance demanded, settlement offers

Card interest is charged monthly and is far higher than on a personal loan, so an overdue balance can grow well beyond what you actually spent. Paying only the minimum amount due keeps the card regular but barely reduces the balance. Our guide on what happens when a credit card bill is not paid explains each stage in detail.

If your income will recover soon, ask HDFC Bank about converting the balance into EMIs before the card becomes an NPA. If it won't, a written One-Time Settlement is usually the realistic way to close the card.

HDFC credit card settlement process, step by step

  1. 1

    Stop using the card

Stop all spending on the HDFC Bank card so the balance stops growing, and cancel any standing instructions or subscriptions on it.

  2. 2

    Collect your statements

Download your last six HDFC Bank statements. Separate what you spent from interest, late payment charges and GST; this is the base for negotiation.

  3. 3

    Get a legal review

Our legal experts check the HDFC Bank statements and any notices, and tell you whether EMI conversion, a repayment plan or a settlement suits you.

  4. 4

Send a written proposal to HDFC Bank

Put the hardship and your offer in writing, with proof such as a termination letter or medical bills. Phone calls leave no record.

  5. 5

Get the HDFC Bank settlement letter

Don't pay until the letter arrives, showing the card account, the exact amount, the payment dates and that the rest is waived.

  6. 6

    Pay and close

Pay only into HDFC Bank's official account or card number, keep every receipt, and collect the No Dues Certificate and card closure confirmation.

How to check your HDFC credit card settlement letter

A genuine settlement letter from HDFC Bank shows all of these. If anything is missing, ask for a corrected letter before you pay.

  • HDFC Bank letterhead with an authorised signature
  • Your name and the card account (last four digits)
  • Total outstanding and the agreed settlement amount
  • Exact payment dates and the account to pay into
  • That the remaining balance is waived once you pay
  • A commitment to close the card, issue a No Dues Certificate and update the credit bureaus

Your rights under RBI's credit card rules

HDFC Bank must

  • Report you as past due only after 3 days late
  • Give 7 days' notice before reporting a default
  • Update the credit bureaus within 30 days of settlement
  • Share agent details before any visit

Recovery agents cannot

  • Call before 8 am or after 7 pm
  • Threaten, abuse or shame you
  • Call your family, friends or employer
  • Threaten arrest for non-payment

If an agent crosses the line, complain in writing to HDFC Bank's grievance redressal officer. If there's no reply within 30 days, go to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in. See how we stop credit card recovery harassment.

HDFC credit card settlement and your CIBIL score

After a settlement, HDFC Bank reports the card as 'Settled' rather than 'Closed'. That lowers your CIBIL score for some years, though months of missed payments before the settlement usually do more damage than the settlement itself. Check your credit report 30 to 60 days after the final payment, and dispute it with the bureau if the card still shows dues.

To rebuild, pay every other EMI and bill on time, keep any remaining card use low, and avoid applying for several loans at once. If you later pay the waived amount, ask HDFC Bank in writing to update the status to 'Closed'. Our guide to the No Dues Certificate after loan settlement covers this step by step.

Mistakes to avoid with a HDFC card settlement

  • Paying an agent in cash or to a personal UPI ID
  • Accepting a verbal or WhatsApp offer
  • Paying only part of the settlement and stopping
  • Not collecting the No Dues Certificate and card closure confirmation
  • Taking a new loan or card to pay the settlement amount

HDFC credit card settlement FAQs

Does HDFC Bank settle credit card dues?

Yes. HDFC Bank considers One-Time Settlements on overdue credit cards under its board-approved policy, usually once the account has been unpaid for several months. The offer must come in writing on HDFC Bank letterhead before you pay.

Is an HDFC credit card settlement separate from an HDFC personal loan settlement?

Yes. Each HDFC Bank account is settled separately, with its own settlement letter, payment and No Dues Certificate. Settling one does not close the other.

Can I go to jail for not paying my HDFC credit card?

Not for being unable to pay; unpaid card dues are a civil matter. Criminal proceedings are possible only if a cheque you gave HDFC Bank bounces, under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, or if there was fraud. An agent who threatens arrest for non-payment alone is breaking RBI's rules.

How does a HDFC credit card settlement affect my CIBIL score?

HDFC Bank reports the card as 'Settled', which lowers your score for some years. Under RBI's credit card rules, the issuer must update your status with the credit bureaus within 30 days of the settlement. If you later pay the waived amount, you can ask for it to be shown as 'Closed'.

How much will HDFC Bank accept to settle a credit card?

There is no fixed percentage. It depends on how long the card has been overdue, the split between what you spent and the interest, fees and GST added since, your hardship, and HDFC Bank's own settlement policy. Anyone who promises a figure in advance is guessing.

Do I need a settlement company to settle my HDFC card?

No, you can approach HDFC Bank directly. Many cardholders use a settlement company for the proposal, negotiation and paperwork, and to deal with recovery harassment. Either way, the settlement amount must be paid only to HDFC Bank, never to an agent or company.
