Can you settle a SBI credit card?
Yes. SBI Card can accept a reduced, one-time payment to close an overdue credit card under its board-approved settlement policy, usually after the card has been unpaid for several months. The offer must be in writing from SBI Card, you pay SBI Card directly, and the card account is closed with a No Dues Certificate.
This guide is for SBI Card cardholders who have missed payments, are getting collection calls, or have already received a settlement offer, and want to close the card safely. What SBI Card accepts depends on how long the card has been overdue, how much of the balance is interest, late fees and GST rather than spending, your income and hardship, and its own settlement policy.
About SBI Card credit cards and settlement
SBI credit cards are issued by SBI Cards and Payment Services Ltd (SBI Card), a separate, listed company from State Bank of India. That matters for settlement: your SBI branch cannot settle an SBI Card account. Card dues are handled by SBI Card's own collections team, and the settlement letter comes from SBI Card.
SBI Card is one of India's largest card issuers, with many co-branded cards. Before default, SBI Card offers to convert dues into EMIs; once the card has been unpaid for several months and moves to collections, a One-Time Settlement with SBI Card is the usual way to close it.

- Deal with SBI Card, not your SBI branch: they are different companies.
- If you also have an SBI loan, that is settled separately with the bank.
- Check that the settlement letter is issued by SBI Cards and Payment Services Ltd.
What happens when a SBI credit card bill is not paid
Every card issuer in India follows RBI's credit card directions, so an unpaid SBI Card card moves through the same stages:
- Stage 1
Due date missed
Late fee, interest on the full balance, 18% GST on charges
- Stage 2
3+ days late
Reported to credit bureaus as past due
- Stage 3
30–90 days
Card blocked, collection calls, 7-day notice before default reporting
- Stage 4
90+ days
Account is an NPA; full balance demanded, settlement offers
Card interest is charged monthly and is far higher than on a personal loan, so an overdue balance can grow well beyond what you actually spent. Paying only the minimum amount due keeps the card regular but barely reduces the balance. Our guide on what happens when a credit card bill is not paid explains each stage in detail.
SBI credit card: EMI conversion, repayment plan or settlement?
| Convert to EMI | Repayment plan | One-Time Settlement | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You pay | Full balance in fixed EMIs | Full balance on a schedule | A reduced agreed amount |
| Best when | Income is steady but stretched | A short-term setback | You can't repay in full |
| When offered | Usually before default | Early in collections | After months overdue |
| On CIBIL | Regular if EMIs are paid | Recovers as you pay | 'Settled' for some years |
If your income will recover soon, ask SBI Card about converting the balance into EMIs before the card becomes an NPA. If it won't, a written One-Time Settlement is usually the realistic way to close the card.
SBI credit card settlement process, step by step
- 1
Stop using the card
Stop all spending on the SBI Card card so the balance stops growing, and cancel any standing instructions or subscriptions on it.
- 2
Collect your statements
Download your last six SBI Card statements. Separate what you spent from interest, late payment charges and GST; this is the base for negotiation.
- 3
Get a legal review
Our legal experts check the SBI Card statements and any notices, and tell you whether EMI conversion, a repayment plan or a settlement suits you.
- 4
Send a written proposal to SBI Card
Put the hardship and your offer in writing, with proof such as a termination letter or medical bills. Phone calls leave no record.
- 5
Get the SBI Card settlement letter
Don't pay until the letter arrives, showing the card account, the exact amount, the payment dates and that the rest is waived.
- 6
Pay and close
Pay only into SBI Card's official account or card number, keep every receipt, and collect the No Dues Certificate and card closure confirmation.

How to check your SBI credit card settlement letter
A genuine settlement letter from SBI Card shows all of these. If anything is missing, ask for a corrected letter before you pay.
- SBI Card letterhead with an authorised signature
- Your name and the card account (last four digits)
- Total outstanding and the agreed settlement amount
- Exact payment dates and the account to pay into
- That the remaining balance is waived once you pay
- A commitment to close the card, issue a No Dues Certificate and update the credit bureaus
Your rights under RBI's credit card rules
SBI Card must
- Report you as past due only after 3 days late
- Give 7 days' notice before reporting a default
- Update the credit bureaus within 30 days of settlement
- Share agent details before any visit
Recovery agents cannot
- Call before 8 am or after 7 pm
- Threaten, abuse or shame you
- Call your family, friends or employer
- Threaten arrest for non-payment
If an agent crosses the line, complain in writing to SBI Card's grievance redressal officer. If there's no reply within 30 days, go to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in. See how we stop credit card recovery harassment.
SBI credit card settlement and your CIBIL score
After a settlement, SBI Card reports the card as 'Settled' rather than 'Closed'. That lowers your CIBIL score for some years, though months of missed payments before the settlement usually do more damage than the settlement itself. Check your credit report 30 to 60 days after the final payment, and dispute it with the bureau if the card still shows dues.
To rebuild, pay every other EMI and bill on time, keep any remaining card use low, and avoid applying for several loans at once. If you later pay the waived amount, ask SBI Card in writing to update the status to 'Closed'. Our guide to the No Dues Certificate after loan settlement covers this step by step.
Mistakes to avoid with a SBI card settlement
- Paying an agent in cash or to a personal UPI ID
- Accepting a verbal or WhatsApp offer
- Paying only part of the settlement and stopping
- Not collecting the No Dues Certificate and card closure confirmation
- Taking a new loan or card to pay the settlement amount
SBI credit card settlement FAQs
Can my SBI branch settle my SBI credit card?
No. SBI credit cards are issued by SBI Card (SBI Cards and Payment Services Ltd), a separate company from State Bank of India. The settlement is negotiated with SBI Card and the letter comes from SBI Card.
Does SBI Card offer One-Time Settlement?
Yes. SBI Card considers settlements on long-overdue card accounts under its own policy. Get the offer in writing from SBI Card and pay only into the account it specifies.
Can I go to jail for not paying my SBI credit card?
Not for being unable to pay; unpaid card dues are a civil matter. Criminal proceedings are possible only if a cheque you gave SBI Card bounces, under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, or if there was fraud. An agent who threatens arrest for non-payment alone is breaking RBI's rules.
How does a SBI credit card settlement affect my CIBIL score?
SBI Card reports the card as 'Settled', which lowers your score for some years. Under RBI's credit card rules, the issuer must update your status with the credit bureaus within 30 days of the settlement. If you later pay the waived amount, you can ask for it to be shown as 'Closed'.
How much will SBI Card accept to settle a credit card?
There is no fixed percentage. It depends on how long the card has been overdue, the split between what you spent and the interest, fees and GST added since, your hardship, and SBI Card's own settlement policy. Anyone who promises a figure in advance is guessing.
Do I need a settlement company to settle my SBI card?
No, you can approach SBI Card directly. Many cardholders use a settlement company for the proposal, negotiation and paperwork, and to deal with recovery harassment. Either way, the settlement amount must be paid only to SBI Card, never to an agent or company.
