Credit card settlement in Chennai: the short answer

Yes, you can settle credit card dues in Chennai. When a card has been unpaid for a few months and the balance keeps growing with interest and late fees, card issuers can accept a reduced one-time payment to close the account. Get the offer in writing on the issuer's letterhead, pay only to the issuer's official account, and collect the closure letter. Our legal experts handle the negotiation remotely for Chennai cardholders.

This page covers what is specific to Chennai. For the full step-by-step guide, read our main credit card settlement page, and see loan settlement in Chennai for every loan type we handle here.

Why card debt builds up so fast

Credit card interest is charged on the unpaid balance every month, and late payment charges and taxes are added on top. Paying only the minimum due keeps the card active but barely touches the balance. In our Chennai enquiries, about eight in ten borrowers carry card dues, usually alongside a personal loan.

Many people end up with several cards, using one to pay another. If two or more cards are overdue, settle them together in a planned order instead of paying whichever recovery agent calls first.

Settling with your card issuer

Each issuer has its own settlement policy and its own collections team. Settlement usually becomes possible once the card has been overdue for some months. The issuer decides the amount. As an estimate, settlements often come in at about 20% to 35% of the outstanding, but this varies widely by issuer and case.

We have issuer-specific guides for HDFC Bank, SBI Card, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and others below, covering how each one usually handles settlement offers.

  • Never pay a recovery agent in cash or to a personal UPI ID.
  • Don't accept an offer made only on a call or WhatsApp. Ask for it on the issuer's letterhead.
  • Keep the settlement letter, payment receipt and closure letter safely.
  • Check your CIBIL report 30 to 45 days after paying to confirm the card shows as settled or closed.

Recovery calls and your rights in Tamil Nadu

Card issuers and their agents must follow the RBI's recovery rules: calls only between 8 am and 7 pm, no threats or abuse, and no calls to your family, friends or employer to shame you.

Tamil Nadu's Money Lending Entities (Prevention of Coercive Actions) Act, 2025 came into force on 19 November 2025. It targets coercive recovery by microfinance institutions, money-lending agencies and digital lending platforms in the state, and its coercive-recovery provisions also reach NBFCs working here (NBFCs challenged this in the Madras High Court in 2026, and the case is pending). Banks follow the RBI's recovery rules, which also ban threats, abuse, calls to your family or employer, and calls outside 8 am to 7 pm.

Chennai now has three police commissionerates: Greater Chennai, Tambaram and Avadi, each with its own cyber crime stations. Threats or morphed photos can be reported at your local station, at cybercrime.gov.in, or on the 1930 helpline.

Credit card settlement in Chennai: FAQs

Can I settle more than one credit card in Chennai at the same time?

Yes. We review all your cards together, decide the order based on balances, notices and recovery pressure, and negotiate each one in writing with its issuer.

Will credit card settlement affect my CIBIL score?

Yes. A settled card shows as "Settled" on your credit report, which can make new credit harder for a while. It suits cardholders who truly can't pay in full. Paying other credit on time helps your score recover.

Can a card issuer take me to court in Chennai?

An issuer can file a civil recovery suit, and if a cheque you gave bounces, it can send a Section 138 notice. Claims of ₹20 lakh or more can go to DRT Chennai. Most card cases settle before reaching court.

Recovery agents are calling my office in Chennai. Is that allowed?

No. RBI rules bar agents from contacting your employer, family or friends to pressure you, and from calling outside 8 am to 7 pm. Note the date, time and number of each call and report it to the issuer's grievance officer.

Do you take calls in Tamil?

Our calls are in English, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada. Many Chennai clients speak with us in English, and all offers are in writing.
