Can you settle a IDFC FIRST credit card?
Yes. IDFC FIRST Bank can accept a reduced, one-time payment to close an overdue credit card under its board-approved settlement policy, usually after the card has been unpaid for several months. The offer must be in writing from IDFC FIRST Bank, you pay IDFC FIRST Bank directly, and the card account is closed with a No Dues Certificate.
This guide is for IDFC FIRST Bank cardholders who have missed payments, are getting collection calls, or have already received a settlement offer, and want to close the card safely. What IDFC FIRST Bank accepts depends on how long the card has been overdue, how much of the balance is interest, late fees and GST rather than spending, your income and hardship, and its own settlement policy.
About IDFC FIRST Bank credit cards and settlement
IDFC FIRST Bank was formed in 2018 by the merger of IDFC Bank and Capital First, and has grown quickly in credit cards, many of them lifetime-free. A lifetime-free card has no annual fee, but interest, late payment charges and GST still apply to unpaid dues.
Many IDFC FIRST borrowers also hold a consumer durable or personal loan from the bank, a legacy of Capital First's consumer lending. Card dues are handled by the card collections team, and each account is settled separately with its own letter.

- A lifetime-free card still charges interest and late fees on unpaid dues; check the statement.

What happens when a IDFC FIRST credit card bill is not paid
Every card issuer in India follows RBI's credit card directions, so an unpaid IDFC FIRST Bank card moves through the same stages:
- Stage 1
Due date missed
Late fee, interest on the full balance, 18% GST on charges
- Stage 2
3+ days late
Reported to credit bureaus as past due
- Stage 3
30–90 days
Card blocked, collection calls, 7-day notice before default reporting
- Stage 4
90+ days
Account is an NPA; full balance demanded, settlement offers
Card interest is charged monthly and is far higher than on a personal loan, so an overdue balance can grow well beyond what you actually spent. Paying only the minimum amount due keeps the card regular but barely reduces the balance. Our guide on what happens when a credit card bill is not paid explains each stage in detail.
IDFC FIRST credit card: EMI conversion, repayment plan or settlement?
| Convert to EMI | Repayment plan | One-Time Settlement | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You pay | Full balance in fixed EMIs | Full balance on a schedule | A reduced agreed amount |
| Best when | Income is steady but stretched | A short-term setback | You can't repay in full |
| When offered | Usually before default | Early in collections | After months overdue |
| On CIBIL | Regular if EMIs are paid | Recovers as you pay | 'Settled' for some years |
If your income will recover soon, ask IDFC FIRST Bank about converting the balance into EMIs before the card becomes an NPA. If it won't, a written One-Time Settlement is usually the realistic way to close the card.

IDFC FIRST credit card settlement and your CIBIL score
After a settlement, IDFC FIRST Bank reports the card as 'Settled' rather than 'Closed'. That lowers your CIBIL score for some years, though months of missed payments before the settlement usually do more damage than the settlement itself. Check your credit report 30 to 60 days after the final payment, and dispute it with the bureau if the card still shows dues.
To rebuild, pay every other EMI and bill on time, keep any remaining card use low, and avoid applying for several loans at once. If you later pay the waived amount, ask IDFC FIRST Bank in writing to update the status to 'Closed'. Our guide to the No Dues Certificate after loan settlement covers this step by step.
Mistakes to avoid with a IDFC FIRST card settlement
- Paying an agent in cash or to a personal UPI ID
- Accepting a verbal or WhatsApp offer
- Paying only part of the settlement and stopping
- Not collecting the No Dues Certificate and card closure confirmation
- Taking a new loan or card to pay the settlement amount
IDFC FIRST credit card settlement FAQs
Does IDFC FIRST Bank settle credit card dues?
Yes. IDFC FIRST Bank considers One-Time Settlements on long-overdue card accounts under its board-approved policy. Get the offer on IDFC FIRST Bank letterhead before you pay.
My IDFC FIRST card is lifetime-free. Why has the balance grown so much?
Lifetime-free means no annual fee. Interest on the unpaid balance, late payment charges and GST on those charges still apply every month, which is why an overdue balance grows.
Can I go to jail for not paying my IDFC FIRST credit card?
Not for being unable to pay; unpaid card dues are a civil matter. Criminal proceedings are possible only if a cheque you gave IDFC FIRST Bank bounces, under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, or if there was fraud. An agent who threatens arrest for non-payment alone is breaking RBI's rules.
How does a IDFC FIRST credit card settlement affect my CIBIL score?
IDFC FIRST Bank reports the card as 'Settled', which lowers your score for some years. Under RBI's credit card rules, the issuer must update your status with the credit bureaus within 30 days of the settlement. If you later pay the waived amount, you can ask for it to be shown as 'Closed'.
How much will IDFC FIRST Bank accept to settle a credit card?
There is no fixed percentage. It depends on how long the card has been overdue, the split between what you spent and the interest, fees and GST added since, your hardship, and IDFC FIRST Bank's own settlement policy. Anyone who promises a figure in advance is guessing.
Do I need a settlement company to settle my IDFC FIRST card?
No, you can approach IDFC FIRST Bank directly. Many cardholders use a settlement company for the proposal, negotiation and paperwork, and to deal with recovery harassment. Either way, the settlement amount must be paid only to IDFC FIRST Bank, never to an agent or company.
