CIBIL not updated after loan settlement or closure: how to fix it

13 min · Raj · Credit Score

If CIBIL is not updated after loan settlement or closure, first wait for one or two reporting cycles, because lenders send data to the bureaus every fortnight. If the account still shows a balance or overdue after that, raise a dispute with the bureau and write to the lender with your settlement letter and receipts. Under RBI rules, a complaint must be resolved within 30 days, or the lender and bureau owe you Rs 100 for each day of delay. This guide covers each step, including what to do if you never got a letter or NOC.

Why CIBIL is not updated after settlement

Your credit report shows what your lender tells the bureau. When you close or settle a loan, the lender has to mark the account closed or settled with a zero balance in its next data file. Several things can delay or break that update.

  • Timing. Since 1 January 2025, the RBI has required lenders to report credit information at least fortnightly, as of the 15th and the last day of each month, within seven days of each cut-off. A payment made just after a cut-off may take a few weeks to show.
  • The lender has not processed the closure. Your final payment may sit in a suspense account, or a small charge may still be open.
  • The account was sold or moved. After a transfer to an asset reconstruction company, the new owner reports the account, and the original lender may stop updating it.
  • A small balance is left. Unpaid late charges, interest for the last few days, or a rounding difference can keep the account open.
  • Data errors. Wrong dates, a wrong amount written off, or the account showing under someone else's details.

Loan closed but CIBIL not updated: first check what the report says

Get your full credit report from each bureau. The RBI requires each bureau to give individuals one free full credit report, with score, every calendar year, through a link on its home page. Then look at the account line and compare it with your papers.

What the report showsWhat it usually meansWhat to do
Active, with the old balanceThe lender has not reported the closure yetWait one more cycle, then write to the lender and dispute
Settled, with a zero balanceThe settlement is correctly reportedNothing to fix. 'Settled' is the correct status for a settlement
Settled, but an amount still overdueThe closure is half doneDispute with the bureau and attach your letter and receipts
Written off, after you paidThe lender has not updated the old write-offAsk the lender to report it as settled or closed, then dispute
Closed, when you settledThe lender reported it more favourablyNothing to do. Keep your papers safe
Account you do not recognisePossible error or fraudDispute at once, and report fraud to the lender

Remember that 'Settled' is not an error. If you paid less than the full dues, the lender is right to report 'Settled'. The only reliable way to change that to 'Closed' is to pay the amount that was waived and ask the lender to update its reporting. Our guide to settled status explains this in detail.

RBI rules on credit information updates and compensation

On 26 October 2023 the RBI issued two circulars to protect borrowers in credit report disputes. They came into effect six months later, in April 2024, and the RBI has since carried them into its consolidated directions on credit information reporting. In plain terms, they say:

  • A credit information complaint must be resolved within 30 calendar days from the date you first filed it. The Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act, 2005 also requires a lender or bureau to update information within 30 days of a request.
  • Within those 30 days, the lender has 21 days to send its answer to the bureau, and the bureau has the remaining 9 days.
  • If the complaint is not resolved in 30 days, you are entitled to Rs 100 for each calendar day of delay. The lender and the bureau share it in proportion to the delay each one caused.
  • The compensation must be credited to your bank account within five working days of the complaint being resolved.
  • If a correction request is rejected, the lender must tell you why.
  • Lenders must alert you by SMS or email when they report a default or days past due, and bureaus must alert you when your report is accessed.
  • If compensation is wrongly denied, you can take the matter to the RBI Ombudsman.

Separately, for secured loans, RBI rules require lenders to return original property documents within 30 days of full repayment or settlement, with Rs 5,000 a day compensation for delay caused by the lender. Our NOC guide covers this.

How to close loan account in CIBIL: the dispute process

  1. 1Collect your proof: the settlement or closure letter, every payment receipt with its transaction reference, the No Dues Certificate or NOC, and the latest loan statement.
  2. 2Write to the lender first. Email customer care with your account number, attach the papers, and ask it to report the account as closed or settled with a zero balance. Note the date and the complaint number.
  3. 3Raise a dispute with each bureau that shows the error. On CIBIL, sign in on the CIBIL website and use the dispute section, choose the account and the field that is wrong, and upload your documents. Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark have their own dispute forms on their websites.
  4. 4Keep the dispute ID and the date. The 30 days run from the date you first filed the complaint.
  5. 5The bureau sends your dispute to the lender. If the lender confirms the change, the bureau updates the report. If the lender rejects it, you should be told the reason.
  6. 6If the 30 days pass without a fix, write to the lender and the bureau asking for the Rs 100 a day compensation under the RBI framework.
  7. 7Download a fresh report after the dispute closes and check each field again.

Dispute with all four bureaus, not just CIBIL

Lenders report to TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. A new lender may look at any of them. Fixing CIBIL alone can leave the old balance on another report, so check all four and raise a separate dispute wherever the error appears.

Escalate: grievance officer, then the RBI Ombudsman

If customer care does not fix the reporting, write to the lender's grievance redressal or nodal officer. Banks and NBFCs publish these contacts on their websites, usually under 'grievance redressal'. Every lender must also have a nodal point for credit bureau complaints.

If the lender does not reply within 30 days, or you are not satisfied with its reply, you can complain under the Reserve Bank - Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, which replaced the 2021 scheme from 1 July 2026. File online at cms.rbi.org.in. According to the RBI's FAQs, you must file within 90 days from the date the 30-day reply period ends or the date of the lender's last reply, whichever is later. Credit bureaus are also covered by the scheme, with some exclusions, so read the scheme's FAQs before you file against a bureau.

Settlement letter not received: what to do

Without a letter, you have no proof that the lender agreed to accept less, and a bureau dispute will usually fail. If you paid on the strength of a call or a message, act quickly.

  • Write to the lender's official email, quoting your account number, the amount and date of each payment, and the name of the person who offered the settlement. Ask for the settlement letter and a statement showing the payments.
  • Check that the money reached the lender's official account. If you paid to a personal account or UPI ID, you may have been cheated. Report it at cybercrime.gov.in or on 1930, and tell the lender in writing.
  • If the lender says no settlement was approved, ask for the current outstanding in writing. Your payments should be credited to the loan, even if no settlement was agreed.
  • If the lender does not reply in 30 days, complain to the grievance officer and then to the RBI Ombudsman, with copies of your payment proofs.
  • For the future, never pay a settlement amount until you have the lender's own letter.

Paid the settlement but no NOC

If you have the settlement letter and receipts but no NOC, email the lender asking for the No Dues Certificate, and attach the letter and receipts. You can raise the bureau dispute at the same time using the settlement letter and receipts, though some lenders will only confirm the change once the NOC has been issued.

Mistakes that slow down a credit report correction

  • Disputing 'Settled' itself when the account was in fact settled. The lender will reject it.
  • Uploading blurred photos or missing pages. Send clear PDFs of the full letter and every receipt.
  • Filing many disputes at once for the same account. It can confuse the record. Track one dispute per account per bureau.
  • Paying a company that promises to 'clean' your CIBIL report. Only the lender can change what it reports, and only when the facts support it.
  • Ignoring a small leftover balance. Ask the lender for the exact figure and clear it, then ask for the NOC.

Conclusion: CIBIL not updated after settlement is fixable with paper proof

When CIBIL is not updated after settlement or closure, the fix is usually simple once you have the right papers: wait for the next reporting cycle, write to the lender, dispute with every bureau that shows the error, and use the RBI's 30-day rule and Rs 100 a day compensation if it drags on. If you have no letter or NOC, get it in writing first. Keep every document for good.

Frequently asked questions

How long does CIBIL take to update after loan settlement?

Lenders must report at least fortnightly, within seven days of the 15th and the month end, so an update often shows within a few weeks of your last payment. If it has not appeared after one or two cycles, write to the lender and raise a dispute.

Can CIBIL change my account status without the lender?

No. CIBIL sends your dispute to the lender and updates the report only if the lender confirms the change. That is why your settlement letter, receipts and NOC matter.

What compensation do I get if my CIBIL complaint is delayed?

Under the RBI framework in force since April 2024, if a credit information complaint is not resolved within 30 calendar days, you are entitled to Rs 100 for each day of delay, shared between the lender and the bureau, and paid into your bank account.

My loan is closed but CIBIL still shows it as active. What should I do?

Email the lender with your closure letter and NOC and ask it to report the account as closed. Then raise a dispute with CIBIL and any other bureau that shows the error, keeping the dispute ID and date.

Can I remove 'Settled' from my CIBIL report through a dispute?

Not if the loan was in fact settled. 'Settled' is the correct status. To change it to 'Closed', pay the waived amount and ask the lender to update its reporting.

I paid a settlement but never received a settlement letter. What now?

Write to the lender's official email with your payment proofs and ask for the letter and a statement. Check that the money reached the lender's own account. If you paid a personal account, report it at cybercrime.gov.in or on 1930.

Can I complain to the RBI about CIBIL not being updated?

Yes, after first complaining to the lender. If it does not reply within 30 days or you are unhappy with the reply, file at cms.rbi.org.in under the 2026 Ombudsman scheme within 90 days, as the RBI's FAQs explain.

Do I need to dispute with Experian, Equifax and CRIF too?

Yes, if the error appears there. Each bureau keeps its own record, and lenders may check any of them. Download all four reports and dispute separately wherever the account is wrong.
