Personal loan settlement in Chennai: the short answer

Yes, you can settle a personal loan in Chennai. Once EMIs have been missed for a few months and full repayment is no longer realistic, banks and NBFCs can accept a reduced one-time amount under their board-approved settlement policies. The offer must be on the lender's letterhead before you pay, and you pay the lender directly. Our legal experts negotiate it for you, fully remotely, wherever you are in Chennai.

This page covers what is specific to Chennai. For the full step-by-step guide, read our main personal loan settlement page, and see loan settlement in Chennai for every loan type we handle here.

Why personal loans go wrong in Chennai

In our enquiries from Chennai, more than nine in ten borrowers have a personal loan, and most of them also carry credit card dues. The trigger is usually a sudden income gap: a project ending on the OMR IT corridor, a layoff, a plant shutdown or lost overtime in the Ambattur, Oragadam and Sriperumbudur belts, or a medical bill.

Many borrowers then take a second personal loan or an app loan to pay the first. That buys a month or two, then leaves two EMIs instead of one. If this is where you are, stop borrowing to pay EMIs and list every loan first.

Before you settle: check these four things

A personal loan is unsecured, so settling it doesn't put your house or gold at risk. But a few details change how it should be handled:

  • Is your salary account with the bank you owe? Your account terms may let it adjust dues from that account, so check them before the next salary credit.
  • Did you give post-dated cheques or an ECS/NACH mandate? Bounced cheques can lead to a Section 138 notice, which needs a reply within its deadline.
  • Do you also have a gold loan? Keep it separate and keep paying it where you can, because pledged gold can be auctioned after notice.
  • Is the lender a bank, an RBI-registered NBFC or an app? It decides which rules and complaint routes apply.

Tamil Nadu's rules and the Chennai DRT

Tamil Nadu's Money Lending Entities (Prevention of Coercive Actions) Act, 2025 came into force on 19 November 2025. It targets coercive recovery by microfinance institutions, money-lending agencies and digital lending platforms in the state, and its coercive-recovery provisions also reach NBFCs working here (NBFCs challenged this in the Madras High Court in 2026, and the case is pending). Banks follow the RBI's recovery rules, which also ban threats, abuse, calls to your family or employer, and calls outside 8 am to 7 pm.

Chennai has three Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRT-1, DRT-2 and DRT-3), and only claims of ₹20 lakh or more go there. Smaller claims go to the civil courts, and cheque bounce cases under Section 138 go to the magistrate's court. Most personal loan and credit card cases are settled long before any of these.

Chennai now has three police commissionerates: Greater Chennai, Tambaram and Avadi, each with its own cyber crime stations. Threats or morphed photos can be reported at your local station, at cybercrime.gov.in, or on the 1930 helpline.

How much you may pay

There is no fixed rate. The lender decides, based on how long the account has been overdue, your income and hardship, and its own policy. As an estimate, settlements often come in at about 20% to 35% of the outstanding, a 65% to 80% reduction, but this varies widely by lender and case. Try our loan settlement calculator for a rough figure before you talk to anyone.

Penal charges and late fees are usually the first to be reduced. A settled loan shows as "Settled" on your CIBIL report, which affects new credit for a while, so it suits borrowers who truly can't repay in full.

Personal loan settlement in Chennai: FAQs

Can I settle a personal loan in Chennai without visiting the bank?

Yes. Our legal experts handle the negotiation remotely by email and letter. You only need to approve the offer and pay the lender directly from your own account, against its settlement letter.

Does Tamil Nadu's 2025 Act cover bank personal loans?

The Act mainly targets microfinance institutions, money-lending agencies and digital lending platforms in Tamil Nadu, and its coercive-recovery provisions also reach NBFCs. Bank personal loans are covered by the RBI's recovery rules, which also ban threats, abuse and calls to your family or employer.

Will my personal loan case go to DRT Chennai?

Only if the bank's claim is ₹20 lakh or more. Most personal loans are smaller, so recovery goes through notices, civil courts or Lok Adalat, and most cases settle before that.

My salary account is with the same bank. What should I do?

Check your account terms first. Many loan agreements let the bank adjust dues from accounts you hold with it. Get advice before your next salary is credited, and don't ignore the bank's notices.

Do you take calls in Tamil?

Our calls are in English, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada. Many Chennai clients speak with us in English, and all letters and offers are in writing.

How long does personal loan settlement take in Chennai?

It usually takes a few weeks to a few months, depending on the lender, how long the account has been overdue and how quickly documents are shared.
