A one time settlement scheme, or OTS, lets a borrower whose loan has gone bad close it by paying an agreed amount that is usually less than the full dues, in one go or in a few instalments over a short period. In 2026 there is no single nationwide OTS scheme for all loans. Each bank or NBFC settles under its own board-approved policy, as the RBI's June 2023 framework requires, and some banks also open time-limited schemes for certain loans. This guide explains OTS meaning, eligibility, how to apply and the letter terms to check.
OTS meaning: what is a one time settlement?
A one time settlement is a written agreement between you and your lender to close a loan or credit card for a set amount. The RBI's framework of 8 June 2023 calls this a compromise settlement: a negotiated arrangement to settle the lender's claim fully in cash, which may involve the lender giving up part of what is due. Once you pay the agreed amount on time, the lender closes the account and reports it to the credit bureaus, usually as 'Settled'.
The word 'one time' matters. It is meant as a final arrangement, not a running concession. If you miss the payment dates in the OTS letter, most lenders can cancel the settlement, restore the original dues and continue recovery after adjusting what you have already paid.
One time settlement kya hota hai? (in simple words)
In Roman Hindi: OTS ka matlab hai bank ke saath ek baar ka samjhauta. Aap ek tay rakam dete hain, aur bank baaki dues chhod kar loan account band kar deta hai. Yeh bank ki marzi hai, aapka haq nahi, aur sab kuch letter mein likha hona chahiye.
Is there a one time settlement scheme 2026 for all loans?
No. Many websites and social media posts talk about a 'government OTS scheme 2026' or an 'RBI loan settlement scheme' for everyone. There is no such general scheme for personal loans, credit cards or home loans. What exists is a set of rules from the RBI, and inside those rules each bank, NBFC and cooperative bank decides its own policy.
Banks do announce time-limited OTS schemes from time to time, and these change often. Two examples we could verify in 2026 are below. Both have already closed, and they show the kind of scheme you may come across rather than one you can apply for today.
- Bandhan Bank published a non-discretionary OTS scheme for micro and small enterprise (MSE) NPA accounts up to Rs 20 lakh, open from 16 to 30 June 2026. It used a fixed formula based on how old the NPA was and the value of any security, and it excluded wilful default, fraud and malfeasance cases.
- Bank of India's Nashik zone ran a 'Mega Samjhauta' campaign for NPA accounts from 16 to 20 March 2026, as reported by the Free Press Journal.
Because schemes open and close every few months, the reliable way to find a current one is to ask your branch or the lender's recovery or collections department in writing, and to check the 'notices' or 'OTS' section of the lender's own website. Do not rely on a forwarded message or a scheme name you cannot find on the bank's site.
Bank OTS schemes vs case-by-case settlement
There are two ways an OTS usually happens. Knowing which one you are in changes how you negotiate.
| Point | Bank-run OTS scheme | Case-by-case settlement |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | A defined group, such as MSE NPAs up to a limit, farm loans or small retail NPAs | Any borrower the lender is willing to settle with under its policy |
| How the amount is set | A fixed formula published by the bank, often based on NPA age and security value | Negotiated, based on your hardship, the lender's recovery chances and its policy limits |
| Time window | Opens and closes on set dates | Available whenever the lender agrees |
| Room to negotiate | Little, because the formula is fixed | More, if you can show real hardship with documents |
| Typical users | Public sector, cooperative and some private banks | Banks, NBFCs, card issuers and loan apps |
For MSE loans, the RBI has advised banks to put in place a board-approved, non-discretionary OTS policy for recovering non-performing loans. That is why MSE schemes tend to be formula-based and published. Personal loans and credit cards are mostly settled case by case.
What the RBI June 2023 framework says
The RBI's 'Framework for Compromise Settlements and Technical Write-offs' of 8 June 2023 applies to commercial banks, small finance banks, regional rural banks, cooperative banks, all-India financial institutions and NBFCs, including housing finance companies. The key points for borrowers are these.
- Every lender must have a board-approved policy on compromise settlements, setting out preconditions, limits on how much it can give up, and how it values security.
- The person who approves your settlement must be at least one level above the authority that sanctioned the loan, and anyone involved in sanctioning your loan cannot approve its settlement.
- Settlements are allowed even for accounts classified as wilful default or fraud, but they do not stop any criminal case, and each such case needs board approval.
- If a recovery case is pending in a court or tribunal, the settlement needs the court's consent decree.
- A settlement where payment is due more than three months later is treated as restructuring for the lender's accounts, which is one reason lenders prefer short payment windows.
- After a compromise settlement, the same lender must wait a cooling period before lending to you again. For non-farm loans this is at least 12 months, and the lender's policy can set a longer period.
OTS eligibility: who usually qualifies
Each lender writes its own eligibility rules, but most OTS policies and schemes follow similar patterns.
- The account is overdue for a long time, usually already an NPA, which generally means more than 90 days past due.
- There is a genuine reason for default, such as job loss, business loss, illness or a death in the family, and you can show it.
- Full repayment or restructuring is not realistic for you.
- For a specific scheme, the loan type and amount fall within the scheme's limits, and the NPA date is within its cut-off.
- Wilful default, fraud or malfeasance cases are often excluded from published schemes, though the lender may still consider them under its general policy.
- You can pay the agreed amount within the lender's time frame, often in a lump sum or within a few months.
Eligibility is only the start. In September 2025, in State Bank of India v Tanya Energy Enterprises, the Supreme Court held that a borrower who had not paid the up-front amount required by the bank's OTS scheme could not insist on the benefit. The Court repeated its earlier view that OTS cannot be claimed as an absolute right. So read the scheme's conditions closely and meet each one, especially any up-front deposit.
How to apply for a one time settlement bank loan
- 1Get your latest loan statement and your credit report, and note the account number, principal outstanding, interest and charges.
- 2Ask the branch or collections team in writing whether a published OTS scheme applies to your loan, or whether you can apply under its general settlement policy.
- 3Write an OTS application. State the account, the reason you cannot repay in full, the amount you can pay and when. Attach proof of hardship.
- 4If the scheme needs an up-front deposit with the application, pay it only into the lender's official account and keep the receipt.
- 5Wait for the lender's written OTS sanction letter. Do not pay the main amount on a phone call or a WhatsApp message.
- 6Check the letter terms (see below). Ask for corrections in writing before you pay.
- 7Pay exactly as the letter says, on or before each date, and keep every transaction reference.
- 8After the last payment, ask for the No Dues Certificate or closure letter, and any property papers for a secured loan.
- 9Check your credit reports after one or two reporting cycles to confirm the account shows a zero balance.
Documents to keep ready
- PAN and Aadhaar or other ID, and the loan account number.
- Latest loan statement or card statement, and any notices received.
- Proof of hardship: termination letter, salary slips showing a cut, medical bills, business accounts, or a death certificate.
- Bank statements for the last six months, to show what you can actually afford.
- For a secured loan, a copy of the security documents and any valuation the lender has shared.
OTS letter terms to check before you pay
| Term | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Your name and account | Correct name, loan or card number and the lender's letterhead |
| Settlement amount | The exact figure, in words and numbers, and that it is in full and final settlement |
| Payment schedule | Dates and amounts for each instalment, and the official account or payment link |
| What happens to the balance | That the remaining dues are waived once the settlement is paid |
| Default clause | What happens if you miss a date: cancellation, restored dues, any grace period |
| Credit reporting | How the account will be reported after closure, usually 'Settled' |
| Closure documents | No Dues Certificate, and return of property papers for secured loans |
| Pending cases | If a case is pending, how it will be withdrawn or a consent decree obtained |
How much is settled under an OTS?
There is no fixed national figure. Published schemes use their own formula, and case-by-case settlements depend on the lender's policy and your situation. As an estimate, a negotiated settlement may reduce what you owe by 65% to 80%, so you pay about 20% to 35%, but this varies by lender and the lender decides. You can try our loan settlement calculator for a rough idea before you apply.
Before you choose OTS, compare the alternatives
Settlement closes the debt but leaves a 'Settled' mark on your credit report, and the lender may not lend to you again for a while. If you can still pay something every month, ask about restructuring or a longer tenure first. If your loan is not yet overdue, an OTS is rarely offered at all. And if the bank shows an amount you dispute, sort out that dispute in writing before you agree to any settlement figure.
Conclusion: treat a one time settlement scheme 2026 as a written deal, not a rumour
A one time settlement scheme 2026 can be a fair way out when you truly cannot repay, but it only exists when your own lender offers it in writing. Find out whether a published scheme covers your loan, apply in writing with proof of hardship, meet every condition, and pay only against the lender's sanction letter. Then collect your No Dues Certificate and check your credit report.

Frequently asked questions
What is the OTS meaning in banking?
OTS stands for one time settlement. The lender agrees in writing to close a loan for an agreed amount, usually less than the full dues, paid in one go or over a short period. The rest of the dues are waived once you pay as agreed.
Is there a government one time settlement scheme 2026 for personal loans?
No general scheme covers all personal loans or credit cards. Each lender settles under its own board-approved policy, and some banks run time-limited schemes for particular loans. Ask your branch in writing and check the lender's own website.
Who is eligible for OTS?
Usually borrowers whose loan has become an NPA, who have a genuine reason for default and cannot repay in full. Published schemes add limits on loan type, amount and NPA date, and often exclude wilful default and fraud cases.
Can a bank refuse OTS even if I am eligible?
Yes. The Supreme Court has said OTS cannot be claimed as an absolute right, and in September 2025 it upheld SBI's refusal where the required up-front amount was not paid. Meet every condition of the scheme.
What happens if I miss an OTS instalment?
Most OTS letters let the lender cancel the settlement, restore the original dues after adjusting what you paid, and continue recovery. If you know you will miss a date, write to the lender before it, and get any extension in writing.
Will OTS affect my CIBIL score?
Yes. The account is usually reported as 'Settled', which lenders see as negative for some years. It stops further missed-payment entries, though, and you can rebuild your score with on-time payments on other credit.
One time settlement kya hota hai?
OTS ka matlab hai bank ke saath ek baar ka likhit samjhauta. Aap tay rakam tay tareekh tak dete hain aur bank baaki dues chhod kar account band karta hai. Paisa sirf bank ke official account mein dein, letter milne ke baad.
Can I get a new loan from the same bank after OTS?
Not straight away. Under the RBI's 2023 framework, a lender must wait a cooling period, at least 12 months for non-farm loans, before lending again to a borrower it settled with. Its own policy can set a longer period.
